Erasmus+

Your study period abroad can last from a minimum of 3 months (or 1 academic term or trimester) to a maximum of 12 months.

You can benefit of an exchange abroad with Erasmus+ multiple times, either as a student or as a trainee, but your total time abroad (study abroad periods included) may not exceed 12 months within one cycle of study.

"Cycle" refers to the level of study as defined by the European Qualifications Framework (EQF):

• Short cycle (Academy Profession degree or equivelant) EQF 5
• First cycle (Bachelor or equivalent) EQF – 5/6
• Second cycle (Master or equivalent) EQF 7
• Third cycle (Doctoral or equivalent) EQF 8

To study abroad with Erasmus+, you must be registered in a higher education institution and enrolled in studies leading to a recognised degree or tertiary-level qualification. For students in the short or first cycle, you need to be at least in the second year of your studies.

Your period of study abroad must be relevant for your degree-related learning and personal development needs, and be part of the study programme that you are following.

Your home institution and the receiving institution must have an inter-institutional agreement between them for you to study there with Erasmus+.

Both institutions must also hold the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education. Institutions from Partner countries commit to the principles of the Charter when signing the inter-institutional agreements.

Before the study abroad period:

• You, your sending and receiving higher education institutions must sign an Erasmus+Learning Agreement for Studies to ensure a transparent and efficient preparation of the exchange abroad, as well as to agree on how activities successfully completed abroad will be recognised. This document sets out rights and responsibilities of the various parties
• You will receive the Erasmus+ Student Charter, explaining your rights and obligations with respect to your period of study abroad

After the study abroad period:

• The receiving higher education institution must provide you and your sending institution with a transcript of records confirming that the agreed programme has been completed and acknowledge the results.
• Your higher education institution must recognise the credits (using ECTS credits or an equivalent system) as agreed in the Learning Agreement before the mobility and count them towards your degree, without any further requirements.
• If your higher education institution is in a Programme country, your mobility period should also be recorded in the Diploma Supplement

You will receive an Erasmus+ grant as a contribution to your travel and subsistence costs. It may vary according to differences in living costs between your country and the destination country. 

Grant levels and fixed rates for exchanges in the academic year 2023/2024 are: 

• High Living cost countries including Belgium, Finland, France, Island, The Netherlands, Irland, Italy, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, Sweden, Germany, Norway and Austria 550 euro per full month 
• Medium or lower living cost countries including Greece, Spain, Cyprus, Malta, Portugal, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, ,Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Turkey: 500 euro per full month
  

As part of your Erasmus+ grant, you will also receive a travel grant. The Travel grant  varies depending on the distance between Denmark and the destination country. The travel grant will in average be 400 euro.

When you receive an Erasmus+ grant you will sign an Erasmus+ grant agreement specifying the duration of your mobility, the amount of the grant and other rights and obligations.  

If you are mobile within Programme countries, your sending institution will sign your grant agreement and it will be responsible for making all payments.

As an Erasmus+ student, you will be exempted from fees for tuition, registration, examinations, and charges for access to laboratories or libraries at the receiving institution. Small fees for insurance or student union membership may still apply.

You may be eligible for additional grants from your institution, government or other sources. Check the EUROPEAN FUNDING GUIDE.

The Erasmus+ program provides a growing attention on sustainability, climate change and environmental protection. The program now provides financial incentives for sustainable transport to raise awareness, to increase the number of studies and internships abroad with more environmentally friendly means of transport, and to reduce the environmental footprint of the Erasmus+ program.

The Erasmus+ "Green Travel" includes a financial incentive for participants who travel sustainably and use means of transport with low-emission, such as bus, train, or carpooling for the majority of the outward and return journey.

Please inform your international coordinator if you intend to travel to your Erasmus+ destination and back using low-emission transport and you will receive a Green travel top-up in addition to your Erasmus+ Grant. The Green Travel top-up varies depending on the distance between Denmark and the destination country. 

Please provide your international Coordinator with a Sworn Declaration confirming your means of transportation.  

The Erasmus+ program has a goal to provide equal opportunities and access to mobility and educational experiences for all individuals.

The Erasmus+ Fewer Opportunity Top-Up scheme provides an additional financial support of 250 € per 30 days of the mobility, to accommodate participants facing particular challenges or disadvantages in one of the below mentioned categories: 

• Students with disabilities, chronic or medically treated conditions (applies to both mental and physical conditions)
• Students with civil obligations or called to service in the Reserve (the civil obligations or service in the Reserve must require presence in Denmark during the same period as the student's Erasmus+ stay)
• Caregivers or resource persons. This can include parents, adoptive parents, caregivers for an ill family member, mentor, or support person. It is not a requirement to bring children on the Erasmus+ stay." 

To apply for the Erasmus+ Fewer Opportunities Top-Up simply fill out this Sworn Declaration and send it to your International Coordinator.   

Please keep in mind that KEA cannot guarantee the approval of a Fewer Opportunity Top-up, as it depends on the availability of sufficient Erasmus+ funds.

In the Erasmus+ Student Charter highlights the rights and obligations of students participating in Erasmus+. It informs Erasmus+ students about what they are entitled to and what is expected of them during their secondment for studies and/or for a traineeship.

Your traineeship abroad can last from a minimum of 2 months to a maximum of 12 months.

You can also go for a traineeship abroad as a recent graduate. In this case, your traineeship must occur within one year of your graduation and you must apply while still being enrolled in your higher education institution.

This opportunity is open for students registered in a higher education institution holding an Erasmus+ Charter for Higher Education.

Your traineeship must be relevant for your degree-related learning and personal development needs and, wherever possible, be integrated in your study programme.

You may carry out a traineeship at any organisation in an Erasmus+ Programme Country (with the exception of EU institutions, bodies and agencies).

Before the traineeship abroad:

• You, your higher education institution and the receiving organization/enterprise must sign an Erasmus+ Learning Agreement for Traineeships to ensure a transparent and efficient preparation of the exchange abroad. This document sets out rights and responsibilities of the various parties, a detailed programme of the traineeship, information on insurance, and how your traineeship will be recognised upon successful completion.
• You will receive the Erasmus+ Student Charter, explaining your rights and obligations with respect to your traineeship abroad.

After the traineeship abroad:

• The receiving organisation/enterprise should send you and your higher education institution a Traineeship Certificate, normally within five weeks after successful completion of the traineeship.
• Your higher education institution must recognise your traineeship abroad, according to the commitments agreed upon in the learning agreement and without any further requirements.

You will receive an Erasmus+ grant as a contribution to your travel and subsistence costs and extra funding is available for traineeships. It may vary according to differences in living costs between your country and the destination country, the distance between countries and the availability of other grants.

Grant levels and fixed rates for exchanges in the academic year 2023/2024 are: 

• High Living cost countries including Belgium, Finland, France, Island, The Netherlands, Irland, Italy, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, Sweden, Germany, Norway and Austria 700 euro per full month

THE ERASMUS INTERN TRAINEESHIP PORTAL, developed by the Erasmus Student Network, can help you find an Erasmus+ traineeship.

A teaching or training period between two Programme countries must last a minimum of 2 days and a maximum of 2 months. This excludes travelling time.

A teaching or training period between a Programme country and a Partner country must last a minimum of 5 days and maximum of 2 months. This excludes travelling time.

During your stay abroad, the teaching activity must comprise a minimum of 8 hours of teaching per week (or any shorter period of stay) of actual teaching time.

EU grants provide a contribution to the costs for travel and subsistence during your time abroad and vary depending on:

• The receiving country
• The distance between your country and the receiving country

Eg. a five day training period in Amsterdam would be granted 875 euros (600 euros in subsistence and 275 euros i travel grant).  

If your teaching or training period abroad is between Programme countries as higher education staff, your sending institution will be responsible for making all payments. 

If you come from a business or organisation (only incoming staff), the HEI that invited you to teach takes care of the payments. 

Grant levels for teaching periods abroad between Programme and Partner countries are published in the Erasmus+ Programme Guide. Check with your National Agency and your sending HEI for applicable rates for teaching periods between Programme countries.
