• 6. SEMESTER (MANDATORY INTERNSHIP)

  During semester 6 you will do an internship, where you will be part of a company that works with architecture or construction projects, either in Denmark or abroad. The internship runs for a full semester (20 weeks). Internships are mandatory curricula elements in all KEA degrees.  

  Your internship coordinator at KEA will help you with the practicalities in connection with your internship, which you must organise yourself, including finding a host company. During your 4th semester you will receive counseling in how to find an internship host and how to work out the internship contract. 

  The purpose of the internship is to provide you with real-life experience that enables you to put all you competences into action and get familiar with the building industry before you enter the business as a professional Architectural Technologist.

• 7. SEMESTER (BA THESIS + FINAL PROJECT)

  In the bachelor project, you plan a construction project and demonstrate a broad range of the competencies acquired during the study programme. The problem statement must be central to the programme and the profession and include at least two of the traditional design phases of the construction.

  The problem statement is prepared in consultation with the supervisor and preferably together with a private or public company or developer and must account for the basic focus areas and academic or technical issues on which the student intends to focus.

• STUDY FORM AT KEA

  On the Bachelor programme, the tuition is based mainly on architect and civil engineering projects, which the student will complete in one semester. Project work is carried out in groups and provides the pivotal focus of the teaching. Students are examined on this project, both individual and as a group.

  These projects are multi-disciplinary, and as such their preparation involves all the disciplines. The students plan and manage their projects themselves but are supported by the theory tuition which runs alongside the project work and is in any way possible directly related to the project. 

  All classes have an online timetable showing when an individual teacher will be giving classes. At the beginning of the semester, the teacher will typically lecture in theory; and later in the semester the teacher will act mostly as the students' project consultant, helping them with any problems related to their projects etc.

  TEACHING AND LEARNING PRINCIPLES 

  We emphasize project work undertaken in groups of three to five students, and groups will of course consist of students of various nationalities. The project work is backed by lectures and short exercises which we attempt to schedule in such a way as to achieve the greatest possible synergy between the theoretical learning and the practical project work.

• TUITION FEE

  Non-EU citizens have to pay a tuition fee per semester.

  Nordic/EU/EEA students are free of charge.

  Non-EU citizens must pay a tuition fee of € 6,100 per semester.

  There is no fee for: 

  • Students from the European Union (EU)
  • Students from EEA countries (Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland)
  • Students from Switzerland
  • Students who are granted permanent residency or time-limited permit with the possibility of permanent residence in Denmark
  • Students who are granted residence permit under §9c, paragraph 1 of the Aliens Act as the accompanying child of a foreigner with a residency permit issued under pursuant to section 9a of the Aliens Act

  Tuition Fee can be subject to changes.

• PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

  As a student at the Architectural Technology and Construction Management program you need to bring you own laptop (PC not MacBook). 

  Autodesk REVIT is the main software that you will be working with on your projects. So please bring a laptop that meets the software requirements. 

  All students enrolled in the Architectural Technology and Construction Management program will have free access to the software. 

Application Procedures

• How to apply

  First, and most important, step of the application process is to be nominated for the Degree Completion scheme by your home College. To be nominated for the Degree Completion Scheme you must have an GPA of at least 3.0 from your GBC degree. 

  Contact the International Coordinator at your home institution who will be able to advise further regarding the nomination procedure.

  Next step is to apply KEA for acceptance to join the Degree Completion scheme. 

  Once you have been nominated, KEA will contact you and provide you with links to our application platform and inform you about the procedure for the  application. 

  In the application we expect you to provide us with a number of different documents including: 

  • Diploma from your GBC or Humber College degree
  • Transcript of Records
  • Motivational Letter 
  • CV 
  • Passport photo (digital)
  • Copy of your passport 

• When to apply

  The application deadline for the Degree Completion Scheme is 1. May for students enrolling in the following autumn semester.

  We are aware that not all students have gratuated from GBC or Humber College by 1. May. Required documents that are not available at the deadline can be added to the application later.  

LIVING IN COPENHAGEN

• ACCOMMODATION

  All incoming exchange students and Degree Completion students will receive a offer of accommodation. KEA has a collaboration with Basecamp Copenhagen who offers safe and well organised student housing in three different locations in the Copenhagen area. Alternatively, students may organize this via a 3rd part on their own. 

  We highly recommend that incoming exchange and Degree Completion  students accept the housing offer, since the housing market is difficult and expensive in Copenhagen and it can be very complicated to find housing on your own. 

  Rent approx. 5500 – 6500 DKK

• TRANSPORT

  THE EASIEST WAY to get around most Danish cities is with out a doubt on bike, by foot or by public transportation, especially in Copenhagen.

  Cars can be expensive to buy, insure, fuel, and park in the bigger cities, so consider whether or not you really need one, especially if you’re on a budget.

  Public transportation functions well in all university cities. If you have a longer commute, and fullfil some specific requirements, you might be eligible for a student commuter card (ungdomskort).

  Go to your nearest DSB station, bring documentation proving that you are a student and talk to the DSB staff about the cheapest options for your transportation needs. They are normally very helpful.

  Where to buy a bike 

  You can purchase a bike in one of the many bike shops or larger supermarkets – most of the bike shops have used bikes for sale. Make sure you get a proper lock and authorized bike lights. Biking at night without the proper lighting will be fined by the police.

  Remember to buy a bicycle helmet. It might save your life – if not your brain!

• LOCAL CLIMATE

  Denmark's weather is quite mild and the climate of Denmark is temperate, made mild by mostly west winds and by the seas surrounding Denmark almost entirely. 

  Denmark's mean temperature in the coldest month (February) is 0°C (32°F), and in the warmest (July) 17°C (63°F). Rain in Denmark comes on a regular basis year-round, there are no true dry periods. Copenhagen has an average of 170 rainy days a year. 

  Because of Denmark's northern location in Europe, the length of the day with sunlight varies greatly. This is typical for Scandinavia. There are short days during the winter with sunrise coming around 8 am and sunset around 3:30 pm, as well as beautifully long summer days with sunrise at 3:30 am and late sunsets at 10 pm. 

  Remember to bring warm and rainproof clothes and a pair of warm boots– especially if you will spend the winter in Denmark!

RESIDENCE PERMIT AND VISA

• DO I NEED TO APPLY FOR A RESIDENCE PERMIT?

  Yes - everybody staying in Denmark for more than 3 months needs a residence permit.

  Non-EU/EEA citizens: you must apply for a Danish residence permit through the Danish embassy or consulate in your home country, before you leave for Denmark. We advise that you apply right after you've been accepted at KEA.

  EU/EEA citizens: you must apply for a residence permit once you arrive in Denmark. The necessary application and instructions will be given to you from your international coordinator at KEA.

• WILL I NEED A VISA TO ENTER DENMARK?

  Citizens from some non-EU/EEA countries require a visa to enter Denmark. VISIT THIS WEBSITE to see a list of these countries.

• HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET A VISA?

Health and Safety

• WHAT INSURANCES DO I NEED?

  It is important that you are properly insured during your stay in Denmark. There are two different kinds of coverage you should be aware of:

  1. Health Insurance

  Exchange students in Denmark are covered by the Danish Public Health Insurance. That means that you will be able to see a General Practitioner for health issues and general check-ups plus any specialists that he might refer you to. You will also be covered if you need to go to the hospital – emergency or non-emergency. You will not be covered for dental work unless performed in an emergency situation. Prescription drugs are subsidized, but not free.

  In order to receive this coverage you need a legitimate residence permit and subsequently apply for a Health Insurance Card (called Yellow Card or CPR Card). This process takes anything from 2 to 8 weeks. 
  Therefore, you need to bring health insurance coverage from home to cover you during that time.

  2. Luggage, Liability, and Accident Insurance

  You need to buy insurance that will cover you in these areas. Consult with your local exchange coordinator as to the most appropriate insurance

• HOW DOES THE PUBLIC HEALTH SYSTEM WORK?

  When applying for a CPR Card you will choose your General Practitioner doctor - in general we advise you to choose one close to your accommodation. The phone number and address of your doctor will be visible on your CPR card. We advice you to memorize your CPR number, as you will be asked about it in many different situations.

  In order to see a doctor you will need to make an appointment by phone. Some doctors also have an online reservation system that you can use in non-urgent situations. You will always be prompted to recite your CPR number.

  If you need a specialist, your doctor will refer you to a relevant office and you will make an appointment there. That will also be covered by the insurance.

  In a medical emergency, call 112 or show up at one of the emergency care rooms located in Copenhagen.

  Visits to your General Practitioner Doctor, specialist doctors you've been referred to and hospitalisation are covered by your Danish health insurance.

• COVID-19 SITUATION IN DENMARK

  The current situation with the ongoing global pandemic makes travelling and settling in a new country a bit more difficult. In Denmark, like in Canada, the authorities have put up strict regulations which have so far keeped the situation under control and have only to a lesser extent had an impact on the daily life at KEA.

FINANCIAL MATTERS

• WHAT CURRENCY IS USED IN DENMARK?

  The Danish currency is called “Krone” and the international abbreviation is DKK. Denmark does not have the Euro, but you will be able to pay with Euros in the more touristy areas.

  We advise incoming students to bring a credit card (Visa or Mastercard) that has a 4-digit code, it will be accepted in most stores.

• WHAT ARE THE LIVING COSTS?

  The below estimates can give you an idea of living expenses:

  • Accommodation: DKK 4.500 – 6.500 per month
  • Food: DKK 1.500 – 3.000 per month
  • Phone: DKK 79 – 200 per month

• WILL I NEED A DANISH BANK ACCOUNT?

  It is not required that you have a Danish bank account during your stay in Denmark. However, if you want a cheaper phone subscription with data or you get a student job, you will need a Danish bank account.

  You can get a bank account once you receive your CPR number (ref: Health and Safety). Besides that requirement, it varies from bank to bank what the requirements are to set up a bank account. Make sure you enquire about the fees before opening the account. Some banks offer student accounts for free.
